Commission Suggests Creating 1 Constituency in each District

Jun 09, Kathmandu - The Election Commission has suggested that each of the country's 77 districts be divided into one constituency through a constitutional amendment.

Critics have called this proposal, which ignores the population basis and bases it solely on geography, a blunder.

According to Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari, the suggestion was made with the aim of limiting the House of Representatives to 105 members and creating a smaller parliament with a proportional system.

He argued that this would reduce costs and simplify the system.

According to the commission's proposal, there would be one seat in densely populated districts of the Terai and one seat in sparsely populated Himalayan districts, which has raised criticism that the vote weight would be uneven.

Although Bhandari gave the example of the 112-member National Panchayat and claimed that the system worked well, critics have argued that it also has a population imbalance.

The current constitution has made provision for determining constituencies on the basis of population, geography, and community representation.

A debate has started saying that the commission's new proposal contradicts this principle.
