Jun 13, Kathmandu - A 21-year-old inmate has died while in police custody in Surkhet, sparking concerns over treatment and health conditions in detention facilities. Sabir Baksok, a resident of Birendranagar Municipality-10, passed away at Karnali Regional Hospital.
Sabir had been in police custody since Jestha 27 over allegations of mobile theft. On Friday, while in detention, he reportedly experienced health issues and was immediately taken to the hospital at 4 PM.
Unfortunately, he was declared dead at 5:32 AM on Saturday, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police and spokesperson Kavindrasinh Bohora of the District Police Office, Surkhet.
The body has been sent for forensic examination, with a doctor from Banke expected to conduct the post-mortem before further proceedings.
Authorities reveal that Sabir had prior convictions related to theft and was also known to be a substance abuser. The incident has raised questions about the safety and health protocols within police custody.
