Nepal-India Discuss Cross-Border Rail Projects to Boost Bilateral Connectivity

Jun 13, Kathmandu - Nepal and India held extensive discussions on cross-border railway projects aimed at strengthening regional connectivity and enhancing bilateral cooperation. The two-day meeting took place in Kathmandu, focusing on the implementation of ongoing projects and future collaborations in the railway sector.

The 10th Project Steering Committee and 8th Joint Working Group meeting, recently concluded, saw detailed deliberations on expanding the Nepal-India railway network, according to the Indian Embassy in Nepal.

Key topics included the progress of the grant-funded construction of the Janakpur-Bijuli Purab–Bardibas and Jogbani-Viratnagar broad-gauge railway lines. The meeting also discussed operational procedures necessary for launching passenger train services on the Janakpur–Ayodhya segment.

Furthermore, the final location survey report for the Raxaul-Kathmandu broad-gauge railway corridor was a significant point of discussion. Both sides agreed on technical cooperation required for Nepal’s east-west railway network and potential future rail links.

Representatives from both countries committed to continuing this collaborative effort to enhance rail connectivity and regional integration.
