Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal Engages in Key Diplomatic Talks During Four-Day China Visit

Jun 16, Kathmandu - Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal is currently on a four-day official visit to China. During his stay, Khanal has engaged in dialogues with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and top leaders of the Chinese Communist Party. He has outlined Nepal’s political landscape and government priorities clearly in nearly two hours of discussions with Wang Yi.

Both sides exchanged their expectations and priorities, with Nepal emphasizing its aspirations and receiving China's stance in return. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi conveyed that there are no issues in cooperating with Nepal’s new government, while also highlighting concerns related to the broader geopolitical context. He indicated that China is closely monitoring the increasing influence of the United States in Nepal.

The official statements following the meetings suggest that China remains cautious about the recent visits of American officials to Nepal. There are concerns in Beijing about the potential for increased activities against Tibet and the possibility of Nepal altering its long-standing policies towards China. However, Foreign Minister Khanal appears committed to reassuring China, reaffirming Nepal’s adherence to the One China policy and emphasizing the implementation of existing agreements and pacts. He also expressed Nepal’s firm stance against any activities that could undermine China’s interests in the country.
