Jun 18, Kathmandu - The Nepalese government has announced that all preparations for monsoon response and disaster management are complete. Following a high-level meeting of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority at Singha Durbar on Thursday, Home Minister Sudan Gurung confirmed that security agencies are deployed in high-risk areas and the entire disaster preparedness plan is in place.
Minister Gurung emphasized that stakeholders have been instructed to enhance their disaster response efforts and operate more effectively than before. He also revealed plans to deploy helicopters if necessary to ensure public safety.
The Minister assured that essential infrastructure has been arranged to quickly unblock roads disrupted by the monsoon. He also directed security chiefs to serve the public diligently and take strict action against anyone committing misconduct.
Disaster Management Authority Executive Director Pradeep Kumar Koirala shared that preparations have been tailored according to recent weather forecasts, which predict slightly less rainfall this year but localized heavy downpours.
To bolster disaster response efficacy, Home Minister Gurung has instructed all agencies to work in full readiness. The authority’s national plan estimates that approximately 51,868 households and over 226,661 people across Nepal could be affected by monsoon-related disasters this year.
