Devastating Earthquakes Shake Venezuela: Over 30 Dead, Cities in Ruins

Jun 25, Kathmandu - Venezuela was struck by two powerful earthquakes on Thursday morning, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), there is a 44% chance that over 10,000 people may have died, and a 30% chance that over 100,000 could have lost their lives.

The first quake, measuring 7.2 magnitude, struck approximately 290 kilometers west of the capital, Caracas. Seconds later, a second quake with a magnitude of 7.5 hit the region, intensifying the disaster.

Many cities, including Caracas, have suffered significant damage to buildings and infrastructure. Acting President Delsi Rodriguez has declared a national emergency in response to the crisis. Official figures confirm at least 32 deaths, with over 700 injured so far.

Local reports reveal that a section of Caracas' airport collapsed, creating a massive cloud of dust. This series of tremors is the strongest in 126 years, surpassing the previous largest earthquake in 1900, which registered a magnitude of 7.7.
