Opposition Parties Call for Clarification from Prime Minister Over Border Remarks in Parliament

Jun 28, Kathmandu - Leading opposition parties, including the Nepali Congress, have demanded that Prime Minister Balen Shah personally clarify his recent statements regarding the country’s border issues in the Parliament.

As the session of the House of Representatives commenced today, opposition MPs stood up from their seats to protest, prompting the Speaker, Dol Prasad Aryal, to give them a chance to express their concerns. During the proceedings, NC MP Renu Kaundal criticized the Prime Minister for bringing matters of national importance to the party’s convention rather than addressing them transparently in the Parliament, accusing it of undermining the dignity of the legislative body.

Similarly, UML MP Dr. Pushpa Raj Kandel emphasized the urgent need for the Prime Minister to appear before the Parliament and demanded clarification on the border-related statements. He also accused Vice President of CPN (UML) Vishnu Prasad Poudel of being unfairly detained by the government and called for his immediate release.

Yubaraj Dulaal, MP from the CPN (U), stressed that the government should prioritize efforts to strengthen federal democracy. He expressed serious reservations about the recent proposal by the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) to abolish provincial assemblies and restructure federalism.

Furthermore, Aaren Rai, MP from the Shram Sanskriti Party, urged the Prime Minister to come to the House and provide a factual account of the nation’s affairs instead of making irresponsible statements on sensitive issues like nationalism from outside the Parliament.

The continuous opposition protests and the opposition’s demand for a response led to a brief deadlock in the Parliament session today.
