Parliament Passes 2026 Budget Bill with Majority Support, Promises Economic Reforms

Jun 28, Kathmandu - The Federal Parliament has approved the Economic Bill 2026 in a decisive majority during Sunday's session. The bill, introduced by Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle, was passed following a proposal to endorse it, which received overwhelming support from lawmakers.

During the debate on proposed amendments to the bill, Minister Wagle addressed concerns raised by members, emphasizing the government's focus on implementing the budget effectively. He assured that the government would prioritize capital expenditure and end the current slowdown from the upcoming fiscal year. Waglé clarified that the new tax measures would not impact low-income citizens adversely.

Highlighting the government's ambitious economic reform agenda, Minister Wagle expressed confidence that positive impacts would be visible from next year. He also announced the formation of a high-level committee to study the multiple rates of VAT and stated that recommendations from this committee would guide future decisions.

The minister further explained that the budget aims to manage the country's internal resources efficiently. He acknowledged potential challenges in revenue collection but suggested that emergency measures could be enacted if necessary. Additionally, Wagle mentioned that the government is working on policies to bring ride-sharing businesses, worth billions, into the tax net.

While some amendments to the bill were withdrawn and others rejected, a few proposals were accepted, reflecting ongoing discussions and adjustments before final approval.
