Japan Eyes Historic Upset as They Face Brazil in FIFA World Cup Knockouts

Jun 29, Kathmandu - In a highly anticipated clash tonight, Japan takes on Brazil in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The Japanese team, eager to rewrite history, aims to avenge their 2006 defeat to Brazil, when they lost 4-1 in a match that marked their emergence on the world football stage.

Back in 2006, Japan was a rising force in international football, while Brazil, already a five-time World Cup champion, fielded icons like Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, and Kaká. Despite featuring talented players such as Hidetoshi Nakata, Junichi Inamoto, and Shunsuke Nakamura, Japan lacked the experience and level of the South American giants.

A New Era for Japan
Over the past two decades, Japanese football has undergone a remarkable transformation. Today, most of their players compete regularly in Europe's top leagues, including the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1, showcasing their skills on the global stage.

Although key players like Kaoru Mitoma, Wataru Endo, and Takumi Minamino are absent due to injuries, Japan boasts a strong roster with options across the board. Striker Ayase Ueda, who scored 25 goals for Feyenoord last season, stands out as a top scorer and key player.

Currently, only three players in the Japanese squad come from the domestic J-League; the rest are professionals plying their trade abroad, highlighting the country's football development.

Brazil: Still the Powerhouse
Brazil remains the most successful nation in World Cup history, and their squad is packed with stars such as 34-year-old Neymar, Vinícius Júnior, defender Gabriel Magalhães, and Raphinha. According to Japan Football Association president Suniyasu Miyamoto, the Japanese team is confident and prepared to face the South Americans head-on.

In recent history, Japan has shown their resilience by defeating Brazil 3-2 in an international friendly last October — a match where they overturned a two-goal deficit to secure a memorable victory, boosting morale ahead of tonight’s clash.

Brazil, aiming for their sixth World Cup title, is determined to continue their dominance and secure victory in this tournament.
