Protests Erupt After Youth Dies Following Self-Immolation Attempt in Front of Passports Department

Jul 10, Kathmandu - Youths and family members staged a demonstration at Bir Hospital after the death of Ganesh Nepali, who attempted self-immolation in front of the Department of Passports. The protesters accused the state of being responsible for Nepali's death and demanded justice.

Nepali, who sustained severe burns after pouring petrol on himself during a dispute over police actions involving his motorcycle, was declared dead by the hospital on Friday morning. His family and supporters gathered at Bir Hospital, holding placards reading "Down with the murderous government," and expressed anger over the delayed notice of his death.

Nepali’s family has announced that they will not take custody of his body until the government takes responsibility for their son's death, citing negligence by the authorities. The incident occurred after Kathmandu Metropolitan Police allegedly locked his motorcycle wheel, leading Nepali to attempt self-immolation out of frustration.

The tragic death has sparked widespread outrage, with calls for accountability and justice for Nepali's demise.
