Tragic Discovery: Body of Indian Student in Finland Found Two Months After Disappearance

Jul 12, Kathmandu - The body of 18-year-old Indian student from Hyderabad, Manideep Reddy Gutta, has been recovered from a maritime area in Helsinki, raising questions and concerns among his family and community. The family’s legal representative, KLB Kumar, confirmed on Sunday that Manideep’s body was found nearly two months after he went missing on May 5.

Kumar expressed suspicion over the circumstances surrounding Manideep’s death, criticizing the investigation for its slow progress and the delay in locating the body. The family has demanded a transparent and impartial inquiry into the incident.

Indian Embassy Confirms Identification

The Indian Embassy in Finland officially confirmed on July 10 that the remains found in the Helsinki maritime zone belonged to Manideep Reddy Gutta. His parents, G. Muthyam Reddy and Mamta Reddy, have filed a petition with the Telangana High Court seeking justice and a thorough investigation into their son’s disappearance and death.

Student Studied Engineering in Finland

Manideep was enrolled in his first year of engineering at Lahti University of Technology’s Lahti Campus in Finland. Residing in the Ritaniementie area of Lahti city, he had traveled to Finland in 2025 for higher education. According to his mother Mamta Reddy, on May 5, Manideep had called her requesting 5,000 rupees, which she promptly transferred to his account. However, he lost contact with his family shortly afterward.

Disappearance After Reaching Helsinki

According to initial police investigations, Manideep traveled approximately 100 kilometers by bus from Lahti, spending around 2,500 rupees. CCTV footage shows him dining at a popular restaurant and walking in a shopping mall in Helsinki. His last sighting was captured near a shopping center, after which his mobile phone went offline, and contacts with him were severed.

Family Questions and Concerns

Since the incident, his parents have been raising numerous questions: Why did Manideep suddenly travel from Lahti to Helsinki? Was he under any pressure? Was there any conflict or threat? Mamta Reddy expressed her confusion, stating, “We don’t really know what happened to our son. He only asked for a small amount of money, and then he vanished.”
