Family of Nepali Man Who Self-Immolated Prepares to File Police Complaint

Jul 13, Kathmandu - The family of Nepali man Ganesh, who set himself on fire in a protest over a dispute with police, is preparing to file a formal complaint with the police.

The family arrived at Kalimati Police Station to submit their grievance. Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, Superintendent of Police and spokesperson at the Kathmandu District Police Office, confirmed that the complaint would be registered and the legal process would follow. “In cases of unnatural death, a police report is filed, after which investigations commence. Post-mortem procedures are carried out, and the family is given the body for final rites. If there is a need to pursue a case legally, that process will be initiated,” Bhattarai stated.

Just recently, on Sunday, an agreement was reached between the family and authorities on a 9-point settlement. The incident occurred when Nepali, after a dispute with police over a motorcycle wheel lock outside the Passport Department in Tripureshwor, doused himself with petrol and set himself ablaze. He succumbed to his injuries at Bir Hospital the following day.

Following the incident, police summoned the senior police officials and eyewitnesses for questioning. The police documented their statements and released them afterward.

To investigate the matter comprehensively, a five-member committee has been formed under the command of DIG Govinda Thapaliya, who is stationed at the Kathmandu Valley Police Office in Ranipokhari.
