Epic film "Odyssy" earns $264.1 million in opening weekend, marking Nolan's biggest debut to date

Jul 21, Kathmandu - Hollywood director Christopher Nolan's latest film, "The Odyssey," has made a historic debut at the global box office. Within its first weekend, the film has grossed an impressive $264.1 million worldwide, setting a new record for Nolan's career-high opening.

According to Universal Pictures, the film alone generated $124.5 million from North America. Thanks to strong international earnings, "The Odyssey" has surpassed Nolan’s previous blockbuster hits "Oppenheimer" and "The Dark Knight" in global opening figures. Notably, "The Dark Knight Rises" (2012) earned approximately $249 million in its opening weekend globally.

In terms of North American opening, "Odyssy" ranks third among Nolan’s films, following "The Dark Knight Rises" and "The Dark Knight." However, when combined with international revenue, it stands as Nolan’s biggest worldwide opening ever.

Nolan’s most lucrative films, "The Dark Knight" and "The Dark Knight Rises," each crossed the $1 billion mark globally. With positive word-of-mouth and enthusiastic audience reactions, "Odyssy" is expected to follow suit and achieve similar success. Nolan’s previous film, "Oppenheimer," grossed over $915 million worldwide in 2023.

Based on the famous Greek epic by Homer, "The Odyssey" features actor Matt Damon portraying the legendary Greek hero Odysseus. The film narrates the perilous journey he faces while returning home from war.

Produced at an estimated budget of $250 million, the film has received excellent audience feedback since its release. Alongside Matt Damon, the cast includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, and Robert Pattinson, among others. The film is currently performing remarkably well at cinemas worldwide, including in Nepal, where it was released on Friday.
