Jul 23, Kathmandu - Former Prime Minister and Chairman of CPN (UML) KP Sharma Oli has expressed deep concern over the current government's continuous interference with the constitution, alleging that political revenge and the weakening of political parties are undermining Nepal’s democratic framework. Oli emphasized the urgent need to safeguard the constitution before pursuing any amendments.

Speaking at an event organized by UML’s Kathmandu Valley Provincial Committee on the 48th Pushpa Lal Memorial Day, Oli accused the current administration of repeated attacks on the constitution and efforts to weaken it further. He pointed out that constitutional violations are occurring at multiple levels, including actions taken by former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, which Oli described as unconstitutional and contrary to the spirit of the constitution.

Oli criticized the decision to dissolve the Parliament, claiming that the government’s recommendation was deemed unconstitutional, while decisions made outside the constitution were erroneously validated. He also raised concerns over the legitimacy of newly formed commissions, political decisions, and elections, suggesting that they are attempts to legitimize illegal processes.

Highlighting issues surrounding the implementation of ordinances, Oli accused the government of undermining democratic values by sidestepping parliamentary accountability and running the state through unconstitutional means. He reiterated that the primary focus should be on defending the constitution rather than rushing to amend it.

Oli further claimed that after stepping down as Prime Minister, he faced political retaliation, including unjust detention for 15-16 days without any charges being proven. He pointed fingers at the current government for targeting political opponents like Ramesh Lekhak and Bishnu Poudel under pretenses, describing it as a severe act of political revenge.

Calling for unity among democratic forces, Oli stressed the importance of protecting the constitution, democracy, and parliamentary system from ongoing threats. He concluded by urging all democratic stakeholders to stand together to preserve Nepal’s constitutional democracy.
