Shahabuddin, who assumed office in April 2023, served as the country's head of state during a particularly sensitive period of political unrest.

Following widespread student protests against government reservations policies in August 2024, then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country to India. During this transitional phase, with the formation of an interim government still pending amid escalating geopolitical instability, Shahabuddin stepped into the presidential role.

Under Bangladesh's constitution, the president is the ceremonial head of state, with executive powers vested mainly in the Prime Minister and the Cabinet. Shahabuddin, a long-time associate of Sheikh Hasina, played a pivotal role during this turbulent period.

Sources indicate that after Sheikh Hasina announced her return to the country, public pressure mounted to remove her close allies from key government positions. Reports suggest that Shahabuddin agreed to resign at the government's request to ease this political strain.
