Aug 17, Kathmandu - Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) MP Nisha Dangi has urged the government to develop a comprehensive action plan for snakebite treatment across the country. Speaking during zero hour in the House of Representatives on Monday, she emphasized the urgent need for improved medical facilities and preparedness.
Dangi highlighted recent fatalities caused by snakebites in Kathmandu and Arjun Thar. She pointed out that merely providing antivenom is not enough to address the crisis effectively. "Emergency services, adequate beds, skilled personnel, and life-saving equipment like ventilators are essential for treating severe snakebite cases," she stressed.
According to her, government data shows 1,678 snakebite incidents have been recorded in Nepal between 2016 and 2026, resulting in 301 deaths. In the recent period from April 14 to August 4 alone, 57 lives have been lost due to snakebites.
She further called for an assessment of the capacity of snakebite treatment centers nationwide, emphasizing that the distribution of antivenom must be complemented with infrastructure development and resource enhancement.
"We need to immediately move forward with a solid action plan to ensure necessary infrastructure, equipment, and expert manpower. I urge the government to pay urgent attention to this matter," she concluded.
