Breakthrough in Healthcare: Complex Brain and Maxillofacial Surgeries Now Available at Rapti Health Science Institute in Dang

Patients with severe injuries can now receive advanced treatment locally, saving lives and restoring health

Aug 22, Kathmandu - The Rapti Health Science Institute has begun offering advanced neurosurgery and maxillofacial surgery services, providing new hope for patients with critical injuries in the region. This development marks a significant milestone in local healthcare, reducing the need for referrals to distant hospitals.

Amidst this progress, 21-year-old Amar Kumar Jhaakri from Triveni Municipality, Rolpa, who was severely injured in a bus accident on his way to Kathmandu for foreign employment, received successful treatment at the institute. He sustained a head injury with blood clots and facial trauma, and was brought to the hospital in a semi-conscious state.

A team of specialists including neurosurgeon Dr. Upama Sharma, oral and facial surgeon Dr. Niroj Khanal, ENT expert Dr. Saroj Acharya, and dental specialist Dr. Karishma Bhandari performed the complex surgeries. The first phase involved a six-hour neurosurgery to remove the blood clot, followed by a nine-hour 'Craniomaxillofacial Flap' procedure to reconstruct his face.

Previously, such critical cases requiring neurosurgery had to be referred to major hospitals in Kathmandu or elsewhere, but now local residents can access top-tier neurosurgical care at the institute itself.

After a demanding two-phase surgery totaling 15 hours, Jhaakri’s life was saved, and his facial appearance was restored to normal. Expressing gratitude, he appreciated the dedicated medical team for their efforts in providing such high-quality treatment at the local level.

This advancement not only saves lives but also brings renewed hope to the people of Rapti and surrounding regions, marking a new chapter in regional healthcare services.
