Aug 27, Kathmandu - A significant landslide in China's Kerung area has led to the formation of a new temporary lake after a river was blocked, raising concerns of a potential second major disaster. Weather forecasts predict heavy rainfall over the next three days, further exacerbating the situation.

Chinese state media reported that the landslide has created an unstable natural dam from accumulated soil, increasing the risk of failure. Recent drone footage released by China’s CCTV captured the development of a new lake on the landmass formed by the previous landslide. The lake, situated near the Kerung border area close to Nepal, continues to expand.

Initial estimates suggest that approximately 2 million cubic meters of water have already gathered in the new lake, with water beginning to overflow. Experts warn that an additional 3 million cubic meters could accumulate within the next three days, significantly heightening the risk of the dam breaking.

Challenging weather conditions and complex terrain are expected to make rescue and relief efforts more difficult, according to CCTV reports. Chinese military authorities have kept some troops on standby at the command center, considering the ongoing landslide threat.

Military officials, including Commander Chen Si, have issued warnings about the potential for further landslides, especially given the steep cliffs along the roads and the possibility of larger landslides with heavier debris. CNN reports that a breach or rapid overflow of the newly formed dam could trigger a massive flood and mudslide in downstream areas, posing a grave threat to the region.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the need for preparedness and caution in the coming days.
