Aug 28, Kathmandu - In the southwestern Tibetan Autonomous Region of China, a catastrophic landslide struck Kerung (Girong) County under the Shigatse Prefecture, prompting immediate rescue and relief efforts by Chinese authorities.

According to officials, 499 local residents and construction workers affected by the landslide in the Kerung port area have been safely relocated to secure locations. Additionally, 555 tourists stranded at the site have been rescued and transferred to safe zones. Authorities confirm that no tourists remain stranded in the area now.

Chinese state media Xinhua reports that coordinated efforts between cultural and tourism officials facilitated the rescue and relocation of tourists. Local residents and workers in the affected construction zones have also been provided with safe accommodations.

To accelerate rescue operations, China’s civil aviation authorities deployed aircraft that transported 324 rescuers to the disaster zone by Thursday afternoon. Moreover, 24 tons of rescue equipment, daily essentials, and medical supplies have been delivered to aid ongoing rescue and relief activities, according to Xinhua.

The latest reports indicate that three people have died in the landslide, 558 remain missing, and two local residents have been rescued alive. Search and rescue operations continue in the affected area as officials work tirelessly to find and assist victims.
