Sep 08, Kathmandu - Ncell has launched satellite-based internet services in flood-affected areas along the Bhote Koshi River to facilitate ongoing search, rescue, and relief operations. This initiative aims to ensure seamless communication and prevent disruptions during emergencies.

Utilizing low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology, Ncell is collaborating with relevant government agencies to install devices at key locations identified during relief efforts. These devices ensure internet connectivity via satellite, even if traditional communication networks are disrupted.

The satellite-based internet service is currently available free of charge in flood-affected communities, holding centers, relief distribution points, temporary camps, and emergency sites. Three significant locations in Nuwakot have already been connected, with work underway to extend coverage to other affected areas.

The ground-based equipment receives signals from satellites and provides Wi-Fi within the vicinity. Although it does not support conventional internet or mobile services, this technology offers high-speed, low-latency connectivity essential for message exchange, internet-based calls, accessing vital information, browsing, and coordinating relief activities.

Ncell has obtained all necessary approvals from the Nepal Telecommunications Authority and other government bodies to operate this satellite internet service, reinforcing its commitment to supporting disaster response efforts through innovative communication solutions.
