Sep 18, Kathmandu - In a devastating incident in Nigeria's Niger State, at least 37 individuals detained by security forces in connection with illegal mining activities have died, according to local authorities. The governor of Niger State confirmed that the victims were in the custody of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

"We have received information that approximately 37 people died while in Civil Defence custody," Governor Muhammad Umar Bago told journalists in the state capital. He described the incident as tragic and disastrous and announced the formation of a committee to investigate. The committee has already begun its work.

In response to the incident, the governor declared a three-day mourning period. Additionally, he announced the postponement of the upcoming election campaign scheduled for January.

The Niger State Police have announced an investigation into the deaths and urged the victims' families to come forward with any relevant information that could assist in the inquiry. According to a statement issued Thursday by NSCDC Chief Subaru Sika Anivia, the individuals had been detained since Tuesday and Wednesday following suspicions of illegal mining activities in the region.
