Sep 21, Kathmandu - Education and Sports Minister Sasmit Pokharel announced that the government has fast-tracked a comprehensive plan to ensure continuous education for children affected by the Bhote Koshi floods. The initiative includes immediate temporary learning centers and long-term reconstruction efforts.

During today’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Minister Pokharel responded to questions raised by lawmakers, stating that before the reconstruction of schools damaged by the floods, temporary learning centers, community schools, and residential arrangements will be established to facilitate ongoing education.

The minister also highlighted the launch of the “Ensured Future Scholarship Scheme” in partnership with the private sector to secure the education of children who lost their parents in the disaster. “No child will be deprived of education,” he assured.

Based on the Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) report, plans are underway to rebuild damaged schools, with coordination from local authorities to operate interim centers and residential facilities. Children in holding centers are receiving medical and psychosocial support, with arrangements made for their continued learning.

Focus on Technical Education and School Reforms

Minister Pokharel emphasized the need for reforms in technical education, noting that low interest from parents and students has led to under-enrollment in some technical schools. Policy and legal reforms will be introduced to address these issues.

To improve the quality of school education, a continuous assessment system up to Grade 5 has been implemented. Efforts are also underway to streamline school placements and teacher appointments, along with amendments to the Technical Education and Vocational Training Council Act.

Educational Legislation and Infrastructure Development

The minister shared that policy dialogues have been conducted across all seven provinces to gather suggestions for the upcoming Education Bill. Based on these inputs, the government is preparing to enact a long-term Education Act to solve persistent issues in school education.

In the current fiscal year, a comprehensive mapping of school conditions will guide infrastructure development and teacher recruitment. The government clarified that the recruitment of permanent teachers falls under the federal government’s jurisdiction, while local levels are responsible for contract-based appointments, transfers, and staffing.

Teacher Salaries Increased

The government has also increased the salaries of early childhood development teachers, school assistants, and auxiliary staff by Rs. 5,000. Minister Pokharel assured that further salary enhancements will be made gradually in line with the country’s financial capacity.

Initiative to Lift Suspension of All Nepal Football Association (ANFA)

Minister Pokharel stated that the government is actively working to lift the suspension of the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA). The suspension, imposed by FIFA until June 24, 2026, is being addressed through high-level diplomatic efforts.

Additionally, the minister mentioned that financial assistance within the approved budget has been allocated to support Ashish Rai, who was injured during the Nepal-China friendly match and is currently receiving treatment in Thailand, ensuring his medical expenses are covered within the National Sports Council’s budget.
