Sep 25, Kathmandu - Continuous rainfall since Thursday has triggered landslides and blocked major highways connecting the capital to other parts of Nepal, disrupting travel and the movement of goods.

The Prithvi Highway, BP Highway and Kanti Lokpath are among the routes affected. The road to Hetauda via Pharping remains open to smaller vehicles.

Authorities in Chitwan and Dhading have suspended all traffic on the Prithvi Highway until further notice, while the Lalitpur administration has halted vehicles on the Kanti Lokpath through Saturday. Chitwan authorities have also imposed an indefinite travel restriction on the Mahendra Highway.

With key routes closed, Kathmandu has faced near-isolation. Public transport has been disrupted, and trucks carrying goods to the capital have been held. Vehicles bound for Dhading, Chitwan, Pokhara and Gorkha via the Nagdhunga–Naubise section have been stopped at Nagdhunga, leaving long-distance passengers, drivers and freight operators stranded.

Police Superintendent Naresh Raj Subedi, spokesperson for the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, said public buses were unable to leave the capital because major highways were closed.

The National Federation of Nepal Transport Entrepreneurs has urged drivers to exercise caution, warning that heavy rain could trigger further landslides.
