Sep 25, Kathmandu - Chinese President Xi Jinping urged U.S. President Donald Trump to oppose “Taiwan independence” and handle the Taiwan issue cautiously during talks at the White House. Xi also called for expanded cooperation between the two countries in areas including artificial intelligence (AI).

Xi said Washington and Beijing should make cooperation the foundation of their relationship, keep competition within reasonable bounds, manage differences and work toward stable ties. He also called for implementing an understanding reached in May to stabilize economic and trade relations by broadening areas of cooperation and reducing disputes.

Both countries have strong AI capabilities, Xi said, emphasizing the need for ongoing dialogue about the technology’s risks and benefits, as well as joint efforts to prevent its misuse. He added that AI should remain under human control and be developed with people at its center.

On Taiwan, Xi reaffirmed China’s position on national reunification and territorial integrity, urging the United States to maintain its policy of opposing “Taiwan independence.” He said this would help create a basis for strategic cooperation and the development of bilateral ties.

Trump described Xi’s visit as “excellent” and said economic and trade dialogue should continue. He cited new progress in recent discussions between the two countries’ teams and called for further negotiations to improve their trade agreement. The leaders also agreed to expand dialogue and cooperation on AI.

The two presidents exchanged views on international and regional issues, including the Middle East, the Ukraine crisis and the Korean Peninsula. They also agreed to support one another in hosting the 2026 APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and G20 Summit.

The meeting took place during Xi’s three-day visit to the United States and marked the leaders’ second meeting in less than six months.
