Sep 27, Kathmandu - Continuous rainfall triggered landslides in Baitadi district, destroying one home, forcing six families from their homes and severely damaging a school, officials said.

A landslide struck above homes in Bawet village, Ward 4 of Dasharathchand Municipality, early Sunday. Chief District Officer Meena Aryal said six families were displaced. The home of local resident Kishor Wad was completely destroyed; seven members of his family escaped unharmed. Five other homes were left at risk, displacing a total of 31 people, resident Jagdish Bahadur Wad said.

Authorities are preparing to move the affected families to safer locations, Aryal said.

In Melau­li Municipality’s Ward 9, a landslide hit the building of Bishalpur Secondary School, causing extensive damage, teacher Biruaram Lohar said.

A landslide at Manikakhan in the Khodpe section of the Dasharathchand Highway temporarily blocked the road. It has since reopened, though the risk of further landslides remains, Aryal said.

Public transport suspended

The Baitadi District Administration Office has suspended public transport across the district because of heavy rain. The suspension, also in place on Saturday, continued Sunday to prevent possible casualties, Aryal said.

The district security committee has met to coordinate rescue and relief for people displaced by floods and landslides and to assess the damage, officials said.
