Sep 28, Kathmandu - At least 62 people have died and 46 have been injured in flooding across India’s Uttar Pradesh state following three days of heavy rainfall, the state government said Monday. More than 1,000 homes have been damaged.

Schools were closed Monday in several areas, including the state capital, Lucknow. Rescue teams are moving residents to safer locations. Authorities have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel through flooded areas and stay away from fast-flowing rivers, streams and drains.

Atul Kumar Singh, a senior scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Lucknow, said rainfall was expected to ease from Monday as a weather system over the Bay of Bengal weakens. Light rain could continue in eastern and western parts of the state through Tuesday, he said.

Flooding has also affected the eastern state of Odisha, where more than 75,000 people have been moved from affected areas, officials said.
