Japanese Encephalitis Cases Reach 131 in Nepal; 28 Deaths Reported

Oct 03, Kathmandu - Japanese encephalitis (JE) has been confirmed in 131 people in Nepal so far in 2026, with 28 deaths reported, according to the latest report from the Ministry of Health and Population’s Family Welfare Division.

The report says 1,372 cases of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) have been recorded nationwide this year. Of those diagnosed with JE, 87% had not been vaccinated.

Cases have been confirmed in 90 local government areas across 37 districts. Many patients live near rice fields or pig farms and work in agriculture, the report said.

The government is continuing JE vaccination campaigns in affected areas. Vaccinations are currently being offered across all local government areas in Jhapa, as well as in Ghodaghodi, Dhangadhi and Lamkichuha in Kailali. The campaign targets people aged 30 and above, along with health workers.

So far, 111,790 people in Kailali and 346,777 in Jhapa have received the vaccine. Under the routine immunization schedule, children receive one dose at 12 months of age; those who miss it can be vaccinated up to the age of five.

Doctors advise people to get vaccinated and protect themselves from mosquito bites to reduce the risk of JE.
