Nepal Discusses Climate Emergency Agenda with IPU Secretariat

Oct 06, Kathmandu - The Nepali delegation, which has reached Arusha, Tanzania to participate in the 153rd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), has discussed the climate emergency agenda with the IPU Secretariat.

During the discussion, attention was drawn to the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli floods seen in Nepal in recent years, as well as the increasing risk of disasters in the Himalayan region due to climate change.

According to the secretariat of Speaker Dol Prasad (DP) Aryal, the discussion emphasized the need to prioritize risk reduction, disaster preparedness and resilience building in areas affected and at risk by climate-related disasters. In addition, it is stated that discussions were also held on making international parliamentary cooperation more effective to face such challenges.

Nepal has been raising the problems of the Himalayan and mountainous regions, which are particularly affected by climate change, as a priority in the international parliamentary forum. In the meantime, Nepal is trying to gather support through bilateral discussions with various member states to get the proposal on the climate emergency agenda passed by the IPU General Assembly.

Nepal is preparing to bring the issue of increasing risks of climate-related disasters, mitigating their impacts, and providing necessary assistance and cooperation to affected countries to the center of international parliamentary debate through a proposal.
