Oct 06, Kathmandu - US President Donald Trump has said he is in no rush to restart trade talks with Canada. He accused Canada of treating the US unfairly for years and said Ottawa and Washington must be “honest” about future trade deals.
Asked by reporters whether talks would resume before the US midterm elections, he said there was no immediate decision.
He did not give a deadline for resuming talks, saying Canada had treated the US “very badly” and that he had no idea what to expect.
President Trump accused Canada of taking huge tariffs from the US, claiming that he was the only one who knew about it. He said the trade relationship between the two countries was unbalanced, saying that Canada does most of its trade with the US, while the US does relatively little with Canada.
Stressing that Canada must be honest about future trade relations, he said, “They have not been honest with the United States. They have been teasing us for years.”
President Trump expressed confidence that the trade dispute would eventually be resolved, but did not provide a timeline or conditions for resuming talks. He has not presented any statistics or concrete examples to support his allegations in his conversation with journalists.
