Bangladeshi Man Arrested in Kathmandu with Fake UNHCR Refugee ID

Oct 15, Kathmandu - A 43-year-old Bangladeshi national has been arrested in Kathmandu for allegedly possessing a fake refugee identity card issued in the name of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

The man, identified as Salil Kumar Mitra, is originally from Barguna, Bangladesh, and had reportedly been living illegally in Thamel for an extended period.

A team from the Armed Police Force’s APF Intelligence Bureau detained him on Ashoj 22 following a tip-off, authorities said.

Police reportedly seized a fake UNHCR refugee ID, a Bangladeshi passport, voter ID, national identity card and a mobile phone from his possession.

Mitra arrived in Nepal on June 2, 2022, and had remained in the country since then. He has been handed over to the Department of Immigration for further action.
