Oct 30, Kathmandu - Rain has been falling since early Friday from Koshi to Gandaki provinces, and has now spread westward as far as Sudurpashchim. Scattered to light showers have been reported west of Gandaki.
Rain began in Koshi and Gandaki overnight, following cloudy skies across much of the country since Thursday. Kathmandu has also seen intermittent rain since last night, with steady showers continuing through Friday morning.
Over the past 12 hours, heavy rainfall was recorded at a few locations in Koshi Province. Leguwaghat in Dhankuta received 52.8 millimeters, while Kurlighat in Khotang recorded 48.2 millimeters. Several areas of Koshi received between 20 and 50 millimeters over 24 hours.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said rain is being driven by the effects of Cyclone Arnab, which formed over the Bay of Bengal, along with westerly winds. The system weakened into a low-pressure area as it moved over land and is currently near India’s Uttar Pradesh, according to meteorologist Rojan Lamichhane.
Lamichhane said the system is not expected to enter Nepal, but its approach could bring more rain overnight. Showers are expected to be more persistent than intense, though isolated heavy rainfall is possible—particularly in eastern Nepal and the Himalayan areas of Koshi and Bagmati provinces. Rainfall may increase toward evening.
Associate Professor Binod Pokharel of Tribhuvan University’s Central Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said the system was still some distance from Nepal and could move closer by evening. Its effects may bring heavy rain for five to 10 hours, he said, while noting that the timing, location and amount of rainfall could change.
Authorities expect cloudy conditions across most of the country tonight. Residents are advised to remain alert, especially in the evening and overnight, and follow official weather updates.
